  • Hwy 118 east of Haliburton follows the north shore of Loon Lake, beginning at the east edge of Sunrise Bay, where this photo was taken. Originally called Silver Lake in 1838, then Mink lake and Dudmon Lake, its name was officially changed to Loon Lake in 1961. Originally a logging economy, a train carried timber from Loon Lake to Donald as late as the 1920's. The lake became a vacation destination after cottages began to appear in the 1940's, and winter and summer activities abound. During the winter, the lake is in the wind shadow of Lake Huron, and heavy lake-effect snows cover the area. This photo was taken during one such blizzard right after a snow plow had passed, leaving the interesting pattern of melting snow on the pavement from the salt spread by the truck.

  • Roads around Georgian Bay were built following a path of least resistance. Built on top of the bedrock of the Canadian Shield, they bob and weave . . . perfect driving for a little sports car.

  • At the end of summer, the trees get ready for the cold of winter, treating us to a spectacular display. Cool air and warm colors. Doesn't get much better than this.

  • In todays world of wide highways and people's paranoia if they can't see beyond the next bend, roads with a canopy of trees are a disappearing novelty. I found this gorgeous stretch of road in Prince Edwqrd County.

  • After the cottagers pack up and leave for the winter, rural Ontario puts on a spectacular display. It is almost as if the countryside is celebrating the exodus.

  • Spectacular sunset on a road of many names. Travelling west from Parham to Tamworth, my car broke down in the middle of nowhere. While I was waiting for the tow truck, the sky turned to fire. The gods conspired to keep me there so I could witness this splendour!
