  • The Kingston waterfront used to be devoted to shipbuilding, and the union of Great Lakes shipping and rail serving eastern Ontario. Today the majority of that history has been obliterated by disgraceful condominium development. #historylost

  • Located in MacDonald Memorial Park/Richardson Beach in Kingston, Ontario on the north shore of Lake Ontario, this 19th century bandstand was built in 1896 by William Newlands, and restored in 1979 by Lily Inglis.  Newlands Pavilion sits next to Murney Tower and overlooks Wolfe Island, which view is obscured in this photo by the heavy snowfall.

Once the Breakwater Park project was underway, Kingston City Council voted unanimously to name the renovated dock after Downie.

  • The Lasalle Causeway is the southern entrance to the Rideau Canal system.  Smaller vessels can pass under another bridge without disrupting traffic. This lift bridge allows taller vessels to pass between Lake Ontario and the first locks at Kingston Mills.

  • Roughly translated, An Gorta Mor means 'The Great Hunger', referring to the Irish Potatoe Famine of 1847. This small park with its celtic cross in Kingston commemorates the deaths of about 1500 Irish fleeing the famine only to succumb to  the typhus they carried from their homeland.

  • Early morning spring light bathes Kingston City Hall across from Confederation Park. In the past the park used to be part of the rail yard for the industrial waterfront. All that is left of the history is the old K&P Kingston Depot building, now used as a tourist information kiosk, and a token locomotive, the Spirit of Sir John A.

  • Built between 1855 and 1858, this neoclassical building in Kingston, Ontario was designed by architect Edward Horsey. The central dome tower was added as an alteration after a fire in 1874. It is still an operating courthouse, but was designated a National Historic Site in1980, and is administered by Parks Canada.

  • Nine Mile Point on Simcoe Island is the most westerly point in the Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence System. Built in the "Imperial" style in 1833, the lighthouse faces the harsh, open waters of Lake Ontario. Forty feet high, it was originally manually operated, but is now fully automated, and a federal heritage building.
