  • Viewed from the shore of the St. Lawrence River in Alexandria Bay, New York, historic Boldt Castle on Heart Island is quite a site to behold. A combination of medieval and vistorian design, George Boldt began construction of the various buildings in 1900. Construction halted abruptly in 1904 with the death of George's wife, Louise Kehrer Boldt. The property fell into ruin over the next 73 years, until it was acquired by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority, who undertook the task of restoring and improving the property. Work is ongoing and all of the fees collected for the use of the property go to help pay for that work.

Exposed to the full force of storms in the Gulf of St Lawerence, Its red shale cliffs are slowly eroding, and nothing besides hardy grasses can survive. The light has been keeping sailors safe since 1866. It is now fenced with the communication tower for safety reasons.

  • One thing that Prince Edward Island has a lot of is wind. Sitting in the Gulf of St Lawrence, PEI is exposed to the heavy weather from the North Atlantic, and is investing heavily in wind energy as a result. Indeed there is a major wind research facility at the North Cape, a truly desolate and wind-swept promontory.
